Hanukkah at the Uniting Care Center: Light, Love, and the Joy of Togetherness
Hanukkah celebrations with the seniors of our Foundation’s social center have become a cherished and long-standing tradition. Since this year the holiday coincides with Christmas according to the Jewish calendar, we decided to celebrate a little earlier.
Hanukkah is one of the warmest and most anticipated events of the year among our seniors. On the dark December evenings, when darkness falls as early as four o’clock, the Foundation’s office lights up – both literally and symbolically. These gatherings offer an opportunity not only to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones but also to share joy and warmth.
As part of the celebrations, students from the Sh. Dubnova Riga Jewish Secondary School delighted the seniors with Hanukkah songs. The children’s cheerful energy created a unique festive atmosphere, and the intergenerational interaction brought a heartfelt and sentimental ambiance. We are grateful to the school’s principal, Karina Brikmane, and music teacher Kristīne Zālīte for their dedicated work and time!
The musical segment of the event featured violinist Ludmila Kalniņa, who performed soul-stirring melodies, taking the seniors on an unforgettable musical journey. Rabbi Shalom Kaplan from the Jurmala Synagogue shared insights into the traditions and history of Hanukkah, offering a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the celebration.
After the musical and educational moments, the seniors enjoyed a delicious meal filled with warm conversations and genuine smiles. These gatherings strengthen the sense of community and create memories that last long after the festivities end.
The event was so well-attended that a new challenge has emerged – next year’s Hanukkah celebration will need a larger venue to accommodate everyone! We extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in organizing this event and made it an unforgettable occasion.
